The Walking Dead 2.13

Why is everything in the dark? Like seriously, did AMC skimp on the lighting budget or something?

I don't really know how to talk about "The Walking Dead". If only because they seem to lack an understanding of what a well-rounded character is. Unlike my previous review of "Breaking Bad" where I stated I wasn't in love with the characters, it didn't mean I thought they weren't fully formed. Andrea is literally the only character that doesn't make me want to scream. And I used to dislike her. Glenn, Daryl, and Rick depend on the episode, but every character on this show makes me want to scream. I understand they are not in a society like ours anymore. But the problem is that they still seem to think they do, therefore it's apt to judge them based on how they present themselves. But, let us start from the beginning.

I really don't care how the Walker herd found Rick and Carl, especially when I couldn't see them the last episode. There are Walkers everywhere now. I'm pretty much going to assume that they could be anywhere at any time and would rather not sacrifice the cliffhanger that I had to assume from the creepy sounds coming from the computer to show us why they are being attacked by Walkers. It's kind of the premise of the show. I don't need to literally be guided from point A to point B. Once I could make out the dark shadows was when I finally thought: hey, something is going to happen that doesn't involve the group debating for twenty minutes on what to do.

Cut to a scene with Lori running a group meeting on what to do with the Russell escaping situation. Why is Lori the leader of the group? She has stated about five hundred times in the show that her job is to do the laundry and cook and she's completely fine with that. And I would be fine with it too, if she didn't have the belief that everyone should think like she does. Then she realizes Carl is gone. Why are Rick and Lori so bad at watching their kid? And they want to bring another one into the group. I will concede that this is one time it was beneficial that Carl ran off because Rick would probably be dead. But really, how many times do I have to hear Lori ask where Carl is?

Then everyone gets involved in the Walker herd as they plan to escape the farm. There are two casualties, which I listed in my notes as guy who lived on Hershel's farm and woman who lived on Hershel's farm. I later learned they were named Jimmy and Patricia but I still don't know who they are in relation to any of the Hershels. Therefore, I didn't really care that they died. But then, Andrea got ditched. It's almost as if the show is saying that Andrea wanted to be treated like a guy, so we're going to throw her off on her own to see how she handles it. It's incredibly ironic as the theme of this episode is stick together. Except if you get separated, then you can go have fun running from the Walkers. If it had been any of the other women, they would have gone after them. But because Andrea knows how to defend herself, she's allowed to be left on her own.

The scenes on the road are the most over-dramatic things I've watched. First off, when they are driving away, they never gave a thought that they might need gas. But Rick refuses to let anyone go get gas so they can continue on their journey. Such smart leadership right there. Then there is the moment that Rick reveals that they are all infected. That music did not match the tone of the scene. I understand it was trying to go for creepy but it came out quite awkward. Cue everyone getting mad at Rick. I'm sorry, but did critical thinking skills leave when the world became infected? For the past three episodes, they keep finding Walkers with no bite marks. Why the hell do they still think it comes from bite marks? I understand it's shitty that Rick kept that from them, but they couldn't formulate any guesses? They only spend about twenty minutes of their day fighting the damn things. Also, it's not all Rick's fault. Jenner could have told them all at the CDC, but he chose not to. Rick didn't trust Jenner anyways. How could he have known if Jenner was telling the truth or not? Should he have really upset everyone to find out that it was all a lie?

I'm not going to lie. Rick and Lori together really irritate me. From their blatant disregard for Carl to acting as moral superiors of the group, it grates on my nerves after a while. Their conversation about what happened to Shane was almost painful. I understand that Lori is upset that Carl shot Walker Shane. But she can't let him be an innocent little boy like she wants him to. This is just not that world. Like it or not, he saved Rick's life. If she wants to protect him, then she should watch him. He was her responsibility that night when Rick went after Shane. Rick, in some way, understands that Carl is going to be exposed to things that he might not be able to handle. He gets that Carl is freaked out about shooting Shane and not seeing Lori. He also doesn't really help Carl understand any of his freakouts but that's for a different time. The society they live in doesn't have the same rules as our society, the one that Lori is so desperate to make real again. That society could harm a lot more people.

I don't know where the show will really go from here, character wise. There are too many characters for the writers to handle and they can't write any of them consistently. They have yet to make the characters realize that the world they knew is gone and things operate differently when there are things actively trying to kill you. But mostly, I hope they have a better budget for lighting.

Odds & End

- That was some fake looking fire in the barn. I understand the logistics but that fire did not look like it was burning any Walkers. Or that Rick and Carl were even in the same building.

- T-Dog spoke! He got ignored but he spoke! When was the last time he got to contribute anything to the group? No, seriously, when was the last time T-Dog got to do anything for the group? This is what I'm talking about when I say they have too many characters.

- MICHONNE! I want her and Andrea to have some awesome girl fighter time in the upcoming season.

- I'm going back to T-Dog. Was he not allowed to be in the last conversation? Because when the shot pulled away, his back was already towards the group like he was just eavesdropping.

- I could have been excited for the prison, if I could have seen it. AMC, I know you love "Mad Men" a lot, but I can't see shit.
